Abstract
The stability of the self-trapped exciton bubble in rare gas solids is studied using the pseudopotential method. It is concluded that bubbles can exist in Ne, and possibly in Ar, but are rather unlikely in Kr and Xe. For the case of Ne, the transition energy ( Gamma 1 to Gamma 15) is calculated as a function of the bubble size, and the results are in good agreement with experiment. Keywords
