Clinical guidelines: improving practice at local level

Abstract
On January 10 1996, health secretary Stephen Dorrell announced the publication of Promoting Clinical Effectiveness, a new framework document for the NHS. Clinical guidelines are an integral part of the clinical effectiveness strategy, and published guidelines are listed in the document. This article describes work undertaken in 1994 and 1995 on guidelines which are designed to provide assistance to clinicians in improving practice at local level. An article describing the experience of one of the pilot sites for the guidelines appears on pages 49-52 One of the most important goals of the National Health Service is to secure, through available resources, the greatest improvement in the physical and mental health of the population. Providing a clinically effective service is one of the main contributors towards this goal and a significant component of evidence-based health care is the use of clinical guidelines.
