Carbohydrate Metabolism in Women Receiving d-Norgestrel for Postcoital Contraception(+)

Abstract
Progestins have been used for contraception in a postcoital scheme. The total dose of the hormone ingested during menstrual cycle varied considerably from person to person. It is, therefore, of interest to determine whether the administration of d-norgestrel under this new method might influence the metabolism of blood glucose, immunoreactive insulin (IRI) and the non-esterified fatty acids. The data suggest that 400 .mu.g of d-norgestrel administered postcoitally, slightly influence carbohydrate metabolism. It may be postulated that decreased insulin sensitivity by peripheral tissues leads to augmented IRI secretion in order to maintain glucose utilization at a normal rate.
