Approximately 1/5 of all Philadelphia divorce and desertion cases involve reported excessive drinking. In the divorce cases analyzed, native whites, remarriages, and the lower occupational levels were over-represented in the drinking cases. These are the same groups that are over-represented in divorce actions. Conclusions were based on a divorce sample of 1434 cases covering the years 1937-1950.
