Abstract
Employing the photographic technique with 10 subjects, it was found that, on the average, the briefest fixation possible was 172 msec. for a dot, 157 msec for perceiving a lower case letter, and 199 msec. for stopping without an object to fixate. Readjustments during fixation were frequent in all 3 situations. Thus the briefest mean pause is longer in duration than the 100 msec. exposure required for a well cleared-up perception. Determinants of duration for briefest pause possible probably include divergence of eyes in adjusting to pause and reaction time of the eye. Pause duration in reading is ordinarily much longer than the briefest pause. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
