IMMUNIZATION WITH HEAT-KILLED MYCOBACTERIUM PARATUBERCULOSIS IN MINERAL OIL

Abstract
Groups of Lambs were injd. subcut. using vaccines prepd. by killing the bacteria at 2 different temps., 70[degree] and 100[degree]C. Both vaccines were equally satisfactory. Doses contained from 5-300 mg. of dried bacteria. At monthly intervals the lambs were bled and tested for allergic response to avian tuberculin. Large infiltrates appeared at the site of inoculation, in which acid-fast bacteria could be demonstrated. The severity of the lesion and the number of bacteria varied with the size of the original inoculum. The antibody level was uniformly high, and did not depend on the size of the dose. It rose quickly, fell off slowly, and a 2d injn. a yr. later did not increase it.
