The use of cephalothin sodium (keflin) as the prophylactic antibiotic for open heart surgery

Abstract
Cephalothin was used as a prophylactic antibiotic in 100 consecutive patients undergoing open-heart surgery. Twenty-eight grammes of cephalothin sodium were given by continuous infusion over 48 h. The incidence of post-operative infections was low and the infections were of late onset. No immune reaction to the drug was observed, and no nephrotoxic effects were seen, despite the relatively high dose schedule and the simultaneous use of frusemide in these patients. We conclude that cephalothin sodium is a safe and effective antibiotic for use during and after open-heart surgery.Keywords
