Abstract
Swack, N. S., O. C. Liu and G. D. Hsiung (Virology Laboratory, Veterans Administration Hospital, West Haven, Conn. 06516). Cytomegalovirus infections of monkeys and baboons. Amer J Epidem 94: 397ndash;402, 1971.mdash;During the period from January 1967 to December 1970 primary and secondary cell cultures prepared from the kidneys of African green monkeys, rhesus monkeys and baboons were observed for the presence of latent viruses. Serum samples obtained from these animals, together with human sera from 58 individuals, were examined for the presence of neutralizing antibody to two simian cytomegaloviruses (CMV). Neutralization titers to African green monkey CMV were frequently found in recently captured green monkeys as well as in those held in captivity and to a lesser degree in rhesus monkeys and baboons held in captivity for some time. Neutralizing antibody titers to rhesus monkey CMV were found in a greater percentage of the green monkeys examined than in the rhesus monkeys studied. With one exception none of the human sera examined contained antibody to the two simian CMV tested. No relationship between antibody titer and virus isolation could be demonstrated in African green monkeys; CMV was detected in only four of 119 lots of green monkey cell cultures examined, but greater than 95% of these monkeys had antibody titers to this virus. Keywords
