The Orchids of Krakatau: Evidence for a Mode of Transport*

Abstract
Orchid embryos occupy only a very small percentage of the space inside their testae. The remaining (i.e. majority of) space is occupied by air. As a result, orchid seeds can float in the air for long periods. This characteristic enabled them to reach Krakatau and be among the first plants to grow on it after the explosion in 1883.
