Abstract
Estuaries are a microcosm of physical oceanographic and fluid dynamic processes. Freshwater estuaries are part of that spectrum, though the term “Great Lakes estuary” implies perhaps too confined a regional connotation. Taken constructively, we probably have quite a lot to learn from them that would enrich our perceptions of estuarine processes and help in understanding the relative and absolute contributions of the different causes and effects. We have a lot still to understand about the rich diversity of estuaries, and the contribution they make to the health of the lakes, oceans, and aquatic ecosystems.
