Corrugations in the discs of spiral galaxies. NGC 4244 and 5023

Abstract
Corrugations of the disc shape, which are a well known phenomenon in the Milky Way, have been observed in the edge-on galaxies NGC 4244 and 5023. The morphological characteristics are described in this paper. The bluer maps show larger and sharper corrugations. The characteristic wavelength is larger in the redder maps. The deformation seems to have a ‘centre’, decreasing from this point not only inwards but also outwards. The possible connection between corrugations and warps is discussed.
