Parotid Tumor and Thyroid Cancer

Abstract
THE OCCURRENCE of thyroid neoplasia following thymic or tonsillar irradiation in infancy or childhood has been well reported.1The role of head and neck irradiation in childhood in the development of salivary gland neoplasms has been suggested previously.1We recently treated two patients who had received tonsillar irradiation in childhood and subsequently were found to have the simultaneous occurrence of a thyroid carcinoma and a parotid neoplasm. Report of Cases Case 1.— A 26-year-old man saw his physician in March 1974, for an unrelated complaint. At that time, a mass was easily seen at the angle of the left mandible. The patient stated that it had been present for two to three years, but had not increased in size during this period. The additional finding of bilateral cervical adenopathy prompted referral of the patient to us for therapy. The patient denied any symptoms referable to the neck, including
