Abstract
An integral transform solution is reported to determine the state of stress and deformation in a semi-infinite solid whose modulus of rigidity increases with its depth according to a power law when its plane surface is pressed by a rigid cylindrical punch. The solution employed is quite general and is applicable to any cylindrical punch. Several results displaying the response of the solid to indentors of common shapes are worked out in details and compared with their counterparts for homogeneous isotropic solid. The results indicate that the state of stress and deformation is moderately influenced by the parameter αs.
