Actual Popping Pressure of a Relief Valve With a Real Helical Spring Under Dynamic Load

Abstract
This paper presents the describing equations of a poppet-type relief valve with a real helical spring, that is, a spring having distributed mass. The sinusoidal analysis shows that the actual popping pressure is very frequency dependent and may occur at pressures that are a fraction of the static popping pressure to twice that value. Experimental data which verify the theory are also presented.
