Abstract
The accuracy of the data is to some extent dependent on the accuracy and cooperation of the program directors. Of the 4,630 programs, 89% responded to the Spring 1979 survey. Not all respondents were able to provide complete information on race, citizenship, and type of medical school from which residents graduated; however, 84% of all programs did provide these data. By Nov 1, eighty-six percent of the programs had responded to the Fall 1979 survey. Only 3% of the programs failed to respond to either the Spring or the Fall survey. Approximately half of those not responding were newly accredited programs. Following the September 1979 meeting of the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical Education (LCGME), there were 4,630 accredited residency training programs in the United States. This number includes those programs for which accreditation will be terminated June 30, 1980. Fifty percent of the programs are in seven specialties. Internal medicineKeywords
