Abstract
A low temperature structural phase transition in La2-xBaxCuO4 was recently discovered, and has been shown to severely depress the superconducting transition temperature. It is suggested that this structural transition is associated with a charge density wave in the CuO2 planes which was predicted to play a major role in high-Tc oxide superconductivity. Keywords
