Abstract
Caries results from colonization of teeth by certain streptococci, followed by their utilization of dietary sugars to produce a decay-inducing “sponge of acid” on tooth surfaces. This etiology suggests there are at least three ways to counter caries: eliminate the bacteria, change the diet, strengthen the tooth surface against the acid. Fluoridation accomplishes the latter and has the merit of not requiring individual action. Keywords
