Heritability of glyphosate susceptibility among biotypes of field bindweed

Abstract
Five biotypes of field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) previously shown to differ in response to glyphosate were evaluated genetically by a diallel analysis for glyphosate tolerance heritability. A full 5 × 5 diallel cross was performed using the five biotypes as parents. General combining ability effects and general reciprocal effects were significant, while specific combining ability effects were not. These results indicate that additive gene action and maternal influences are important in the sexual transfer of glyphosate tolerance among field bindweed biotypes. These results further suggest that glyphosate tolerance in a field bindweed population could be enhanced by selection pressure in the form of repeated glyphosate applications.
