EPIDERMOID CYSTS OF THE SPLEEN

Abstract
Epidermoid cysts of the spleen must be considered in the differential diagnosis of splenomegaly in children. The diagnosis of these large fluid-filled masses is suggested in the asymptomatic child, and in the absence of a history suggesting a parasitic cause and with appropriate radiographic studies, a preoperative diagnosis can be made with considerable accuracy. The characteristic radiographic findings are those of a mass in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen which displaces gut and left kidney. Although selective arteriography may help to confirm the correct preoperative diagnosis, arteriography is not often necessary. This report describes four cases of epidermoid cysts of the spleen.
