The Graphic Scale of Thermal Sensation

Abstract
The validity of the assertion that visual aids provide a more useful communication tool between cultures than the spoken word was tested on some 1,500 males from the Solomon Islands. Cartoons were used for a study of thermal perception of Solomon Islanders as they transcend cross-cultural barriers and are a good means of conveying complex and subjective concepts. The results indicated that the use of a graphic scale to communicate perceived differences of thermal sensations was indeed a useful tool, especially in cases where language differences exist between researchers and their subjects.
