Abstract
In this communication is presented a household outbreak of five cases of psittacosis running a characteristic course, with definite pathologic as well as biologic evidence substantiating the diagnosis. These followed the importation of a group of love birds or parrakeets from Havana. Parrakeet is the name given to certain subgroups of the family Psitticae or parrots.1It includes especially the parrots of relatively small size and slender form with a long graduated tail; e. g., the subfamilies of Palaeonithinae and Platycercinae of Asia, Australia and Polynesia, and the Cornurinae of South and Central America. The latter is still to be found in the southern part of the United States and is sometimes spoken of as the Carolina parrakeet. According to Roubakine,2the disease psittacosis in man is caused, in the vast majority of cases, by the green parrot of the species Chrysotis amazonicus.
