Individual growth in stature: A comparison of four growth studies in the U.S.A.

Abstract
Patterns of growth in stature of subjects from the four major U.S. longitudinal growth studies are compared by means of a two-component model for individual growth. Problems inherent in the comparison of data from independent growth studies, such as those arising from different methods of sampling subjects and scheduling measurements and the occurrence of atypical subjects, are considered and solutions are offered. Statistical tests of the individual growth parameters revealed significant, but small, differences among the samples in the magnitude of the contributions of prepubertal and adolescent growth to mature stature and in the velocity of growth. No differences between samples in the timing of the adolescent component were detected. Die Verläufe des Körperhöhenwachstums bei den Probanden der vier größeren Längsschnittuntersuchungen der Vereinigten Staaten werden mit Hilfe eines zwei-Komponenten-Modells des individuellen Wachstums miteinander verglichen. Beim Vergleich unabhängiger Wachsstumsuntersuchungen treten die unterschiedlichen Methoden der Probandenauswahl und der Zeitplanung der Messungen und das Vorkommen atypischer Individuen als inhärente Probleme auf, die diskutiert werden und zu denen Lösungen angeboten werden. Statistiche Tests der individuellen Wachstumsparameter zeigten kleine, aber signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den Stichproben beim Anteil des präpuberalen und jugendlichen Wachstums an der Erwachsenen-Körperhöhe und bei der Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit. Es wurden keine Unterschiede beim beim Zeitablauf der jugendlichen Komponente gefunden. Les probl`emes inhérents `a la comparaison de données provenant d'études indépendantes de la croissance, tels que ceux qu'engendrent des méthodes différentes d'échantillonnage et de calendrier des mensurations et l'existence de sujets atypiques, sont considérés et des solutions sont proposées. Les tests statistiques des param`etres de la croissance individuelle ont révélé des différences significatives, quoique faibles, entre les échantillons en ce qui concerne l'ampleur des contributions de la croissance prépubertaire et de la croissance `a l'adolescence `a la stature adulte et la vitesse de croissance. Aucune différence n'a été décelée entre les échantillons en ce qui concerne la chronologie de la composante adolescente.
