Abstract

One hundred committed patients were compared with 99 age/sex-matched voluntarily admitted patients. More of the committed patients were psychotic (92% to 54%). Testing with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and the Global Assessement Scale showed that the committed patients were in a worse psychiatric state. They were also more often violent or threatening (43% to 19%). Voluntarily admitted patients had more suicidal problems; 47% (compared with 19%) reported suicidal thoughts during the previous month.
