Reliability of Aerial Cache Surveys to Monitor Beaver Population Trends on Prairie Rivers in Montana

Abstract
An aerial cache survey was unreliable in indicating population size or trend of beaver (C. canadensis) on 2 prairie rivers in Montana. Accuracy in locating caches was high (.apprx. 90%) and constant among years and areas, but colony size varied among areas and years. Data on age, sex and reproduction are needed to determine colony size and properly evaluate aerial cache-survey results.
