Abstract
The eye signs occurring in association with thyroid disorders including edema and puffiness of the eye lids, obliteration of the upper orbito-palpebral sulcus, conjunctival congestion, epiphora, chemosis, and muscular asthenia were studied in cases of thyrotoxicosis, and at the same time, the eyes were examined by exophthalmometry. Although there was a correlation between the clinical signs and the exophthalmometer values, the variation was so great that the latter could not be used in diagnosis. On treatment of thyrotoxicosis, an immediate, so-called primary reaction was seen within a few weeks in over 70% of the cases. An examination one year later revealed a late reaction which was a direct, progressive continuation of the primary reaction, and was the graver the more severe the initial eye signs.
