Polymer-based composite materials in general industrial fields

Abstract
An overview of material research and product development for polymer-based composite materials since the 1950s in Japanese general industrial use is given. This progress is divided into four steps, each lasting about one decade; the trends of the fourth period (1984-today), following the third, transition period, are emphasised. In addition, as a future perspective, the possibility of development of intelligent or smart materials is also discussed.
