Abstract
A quantum theory of the optical Kerr effect is developed using the density-matrix formalism. The classical theory of Bloembergen and Lallemand for liquids can be deduced from the result obtained quantum mechanically in the present study with certain approximations. The anisotropic term in the optical Kerr effect is shown to arise quantum mechanically from both the population change due to the high-frequency Stark effect and the change in the unperturbed matrix element due to the radiation field. Keywords
