Relationship of Body Specific Gravity to Body Fat and Water Content.

Abstract
That body specific gravity increases as body water increases and fat content decreases, has been confirmed in 9 normal individuals. Due to the difficulty of weighing elderly people under water for specific gravity determinations, a chemical method for determining body water by the use of antipyrine was developed. Calculated body fat and water content from specific gravity agreed closely with values obtained from antipyrine detns. Thus it was demonstrated that percentage of fat and percentage of water could be calculated from body specific gravity with accuracy. By use of an independent method (antipyrine) the inverse relationship of percent fat and percent body water was confirmed.
