Abstract
Equivalents of Sargur Group of rocks are recognised for the first time in northern parts of Karnataka. In the area northwest of Hutti, Raichur district, medium to high grade metamorphic rocks namely, amphibolite, banded ironstone (amphibole-magnetite- bearing chert), meta-sediments (fuchsite quartzite and sillimanite-bearing pelites) and meta-ultrabasics, occur as a linear belt and as isolated enclaves in Peninsular gneiss. The name' Gurgunta Schist Belt' has been given in order to distinguish it from the Hutti Schist Belt. Alkali granites and dolerite dykes are younger intrusives. The gneiss and the enclaves have suffered three phases of folding deformation giving rise to the present outcrop pattern of an oval shaped dome.
