‘Nurse prescribing makes sense. It is a proper recognition of community nurses’ skills. We will implement nurse prescribing by October 1993’. These words, spoken by Virginia Bottomley at RCN Congress in April, seemed to set the seal on the long awaited prescribing powers for nurses. But if a week is a long time in politics, the seven months which have elapsed since that statement are as several lifetimes.
