Abstract
The K X‐ray absorption discontinuity of arsenic has been studied in the pure element and in several transition metal arsenides. It is observed that the discontinuity shifts towards the low energy side in the arsenides, indicating charge transfer from the metal to the arsenic atoms. The magnitudes |ΔE| of the shifts are found to be smaller than those observed for the arsenic discontinuity in some other compounds, where the arsenic atom is incorporated as a cation.
