Abstract
D-Mannoheptulose in doses ranging from 25 to 800 mg/200 g rat, sc, induces hyperglycemia. The hyperglycemic response, measured as the area under the glucose response curve, is linearly proportional to the dose. Previous work has shown that the hyperglycemic response results from increased production and impaired utilization of glucose. Small doses of mannoheptulose (10 and 25 mg), too small to cause significant hyperglycemia, are shown to impair utilization of an exogenous glucose load. The mechanism of action of mannoheptulose is discussed. Keywords
