Abstract
This chapter details another exchange between the couple in 1943, though once again Elisabeth’s letters have gone missing. The rapidly progressing destruction of the major cities through air raids results in evacuation and a dire scarcity of living space—which presents a likely difficulty in collecting and storing letters for Werner, especially as during this time he is also constantly traveling between Berlin and Leipzig, Urfeld and Hechingen. Hectic activity so dominates daily life, his letters tell us, that it is impossible to stay focused on scientific work. A discouraged and depleted frame of mind is taking over. Meanwhile, it becomes ever more complicated for the couple to stay in contact: letters and packages are often lost, and telephone connections become more difficult to obtain.
