Abstract
The Ionization of lead to charge states between 40 and 50 is possible with an EBIS (Electron Beam Ion Source), if an external ion source will be used to inject Pb + ions. The requirements for current density (<30 A/cm2) and beam power (<3.5 kW) are modest, especially due to long repetition times. With respect to ion yield, the EBIS will be competitive to an ECR source, if Pb 54+ will be extracted, thus avoiding the stripper loss before injection into the BSP. In that case, the LINAC can be shorter and using Pb 54+ instead of Pb 53+ might reduce the charge exchange losses in the LINAC as well as in the PSB.
