Abstract
After developing an expression for the standard error of an estimator of the efficiency of indirect selection relative to direct selection, conditions under which indirect selection might be considered preferable are discussed. Various possibilities are considered: selection on an alternative trait may or may not be better than on the basis trait; one alternative may be better than another, or it may be better only when combined in an index with the basic trait; 2 alternatives may each be not as good as the basic trait but combined in an index they may be better. The conditions under which one or other of these possibilities may be preferred under mass selection are discussed in terms of genetic parameters. Conditions applicable to progeny-testing will be reported subsequently. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
