INVESTIGATION OF EFFECT OF METAPHYSIAL TRAUMATISM ON MORPHOLOGY OF EPIPHYSIAL CARTILAGE IN RABBIT

Abstract
The number of cells in the cell column of the proliferative zone after metaphysial traumatism decreased during the period when the height of the epiphysial cartilage decreased. In most cases, no change in the hypertrophic layer could be demonstrated. The decrease in the height of the proliferative zone is not due to a reduction of cell formation in this layer but to hypertrophy of an increased number of cells. Since these cells do not increase in number, there must be increased bone formation. These changes in the epiphysial cartilage may counterbalance one another; namely, an increased new-formation of cells nourished from the epiphysis, and an increased destruction of cells in the hypertrophic zone.
