The Effect of Corn Steep Liquor Ash on Penicillin Production

Abstract
Supplements of corn steep ash significantly increased penicillin prodn. by Penicillium chrysogenum strains NRRL1951-B25 and X1612 in a synthetic medium. Both strains produced more penicillin in this medium supplemented with 500 mg. of ash than in the usual medium containing corn steep liquor. The fermentations were done as descr. by Koffler et al; penicillin assays were done by the method of Schmidt and Moyer. Mold growth was similar both in the synthetic medium and that supplemented with ash. Addn. of corn steep liquor ash to the usual medium caused a 30-45% increase in penicillin prodn. by both strains. Minerals were apparently significant in the production of penicillin.
