Abstract
One‐dimensionally localized and longitudinally stable wave packets of drift waves are considered. The two‐dimensional saturation of an always occurring transverse instability is calculated by a bifurcation analysis and leads to two‐dimensionally localized vortices. The latter do not show a collapse. It is supposed that this process is a generation mechanism of stable vortices in inhomogeneous plasmas. Keywords
