Abstract
In an attempt to develop a short-term bio-assay of the anti-ulcer factor of intestinal extract, 120 g. to 180 g. o albino rats were injected intramusc, intraperit. or intraven. with from 25-500 mg./kg. of aq. sol. of "enterogastrone" for varying periods of from 1-30 days. After a 48 hr. starvation period the pylorus was obstructed with a ligature (Shay rat) and 8-10 hrs. later the animals were sacrificed and the gastric rumen inspected for the presence of ulcers. Large intraven. injns. of the extract were toxic. Parenteral admn. of "enterogastrone" in relatively large doses did not afford protection against the formation of rumenal ulcers in the Shay rat, nor was it possible to correlate the number of ulcers produced with the length of treatment or the dose of the prepn. administered. Keywords
