Abstract
ON NOV 20, 1965, a 3-year-old girl died in North Carolina from an acute encephalitis 12 days after an inoculation of yellow fever vaccine. Report of a Case This apparently normal child received 0.5 ml of 17D yellow fever vaccine subcutaneously on Nov 8, 1965 (lot 6,145, National Drug Company, Philadelphia). Six days after vaccination, irritability developed, followed by fever, headache, and emesis. She was admitted to the Pediatric Service of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital, WinstonSalem, ten days after vaccination because of increasing lethargy. Shortly thereafter, the first of a series of seizures began and she died 40 hours later. Pertinent clinical laboratory findings are given below: Hematologic values were as follows: hematocrit, 34%; white blood cell count, 34,000/cu mm, with 60 neutrophils, 12 banded neutrophils, 27 lymphocytes, and 1 monocyte.
