Abstract
The attempted synthesis of diacrylylmethane by the acylation of methyl vinyl ketone with ethyl acrylate produced exclusively the homopolymer of diacrylylmethane. This new polymer is linear and is composed of recurring methylene dihydroresorcinol units. An anionic mechanism is proposed for the cyclopolymerization of diacrylylmethane. Polydiacrylylmethane undergoes chemical reactions which are characteristic of beta diketones and proof for structure of the polymer is based on solubility, fusibility, infrared absorption, ultraviolet absorption, and enol titration data. Keywords
