Abstract
A study of the Raman spectra of solid and liquid alkylbenzenes was made. The band associated with the accordion mode of the alkyl chain tail was identified in the spectrum of each member of the series studied. A successful model for the dependence of the accordion band frequency on alkyl chain length was developed. Bands associated with kinked alkyl chain conformations were also observed. Keywords
