Production Ecology. IV. Standing Crops of Natural Vegetation in the Sub-Arctic

Abstract
Estimates of the standing crop of herbaceous types of vegetation under sub-arctic conditions in Lappland (ca. 68[degree]30[image] N) show the annual production to be low, averaging about 2500 kg/hectare for the plant communities examined. This is less than half the corresponding figure for northern Britain (ca. 6900 kg/ha at ca. 56 CN). While the daily light energy received in the arctic is greater than at 56[degree]N in Britain, the duration of the growing season is much greater in Britain. Hence the heat budget (as summed temperatures above 5[degree]c) is 1.8 times greater and the total light duration 1.5 times.
