Abstract
A study was made in 800 rats of experimental and biological factors in the use of the rat mesoappendix for bioassay. The method was shown to be sufficiently discriminating to permit its use for screening the presence or absence of particular forms of vasoactivity, but not to provide quantitative data. In weighing the influence of humoral factors on peripheral circulatory homeostasis, consideration should be given to the primary importance of local regulatory factors in different tissues, with a multiplicity of bioligical agents governing the behavior of the terminal vascular bed. Although a shift in reactivity to epineph-rine was accompanied in certain instances by comparable changes in the vasoconstrictor response to other stimuli, this was neither consistent nor predictable under different experimental conditions. Vasoactive substances have a variable effect on the terminal vascular bed of different tissues, both with respect to the intensity and nature of the reaction. Keywords
