Abstract
The Debye characteristic temperature theta has been calculated from the elastic coefficients for 24 cubic elements by an approximate method. The approximation requires that the elastic secular equation be solved only for the three principal cubic directions. New weighting coefficients for these direction were determined by a least squares best-fit procedure, based on computationally 'exact' values of theta . Comparisons with the results of previous three term approximations indicate which set of weighting coefficients gives the best approximation to theta .Keywords
