Abstract
At present, by the time the primary tumor is diagnosed, some two thirds of patients with cancer already have metastases. NCI has therefore set as an intermediate goal the diagnosis of 75% of all cancer patients “early” enough so that 90% would still be free of metastases. Steps toward achieving this goal include the development of practicable screening programs and sensitive, preferably automated, diagnostic tests. Keywords
