Abstract
This study examined the nature of the relationship between accidents in the first 7 years of life and ratings of children's behavior, based upon parent and teacher reports, and direct observation of children during psychological assessment. Children from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Child Development Study were classified into groups according to their record of accidental injury up to age 7 years. These groups were 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4+ accidents requiring medical attention. The behavioral characteristics of the children in these groups were examined using Behavior Profile ratings and Rutter Questionnaires for completion by parents and teachers. The results indicated strong linear relationships between number of accidents and both antisocial behavior and parental discipline. Keywords
