Abstract
Coccus hesperidum L., an economic pest of Texas citrus, was colonized and has been maintained on citron melons since 1963 at Weslaco, Texas. Also, cultures of 2 introduced hymenopterous parasites of the scale have been reared concurrently by using the laboratory-reared scales as hosts. These scale hosts and parasites are used in laboratory biological studies; in addition, parasites are released periodically in scale-infested citrus groves in an attempt to establish them in the area. Experiments have indicated that encapsulation of parasite eggs by scales, especially those reared in the laboratory, appears to be a common host defense mechanism. Keywords
