Abstract
In this paper an energy criterion for fatigue failure is postulated. Microplastic strain hysteresis energy is considered to be an index for fatigue damage. On this basis, a relation is developed between stress amplitude and the number of cycles to failure which utilizes only material properties obtained from the static true stress-strain tension test. The analysis is found to compare well with an experimentally determined S-N curve for SAE 4340 steel. Keywords
