Abstract
We use the Kikuchi cluster variational method to determine the phase diagram of the discrete-spin three-state Potts model for a three-dimensional lattice. In zero field (no anisotropy) the model undergoes a fluctuation-dominated first order phase transition. The single-ion anisotropy necessary to drive the transition critical is small; 18% of that predicted by mean-field theory. Keywords
